For Reference

Thesis Style and Format Guidelines

The thesis must be double spaced throughout. The print size must be standard throughout and not less than 11 point. Paper used for the final copies should be 8 1/2 x 11 inch, 20 lb. bond. Paper used for the defence copies may be of a lighter weight, but must be 8 1/2 x 11 inches. Acceptable printers include laser and ink-jet.

Copies prepared for the defence may be double-sided, however, final copies must be single-sided.

The left margin must be a minimum of one and a half inches to allow for binding. All other margins must be a minimum of one inch. The first line of every paragraph should be indented a standard five spaces.

Abbreviations may be used (if conventional in the particular discipline) but must be defined the first time they are used.

If there are alternative correct spellings of a particular word, either form may be used, but such use must be consistent throughout the thesis.

The organizational sequence should be as follows:

  • Title page of the thesis
  • Abstract
  • Acknowledgments
  • Table of Contents
  • List of Tables (if appropriate)
  • List of Figures (if appropriate)
  • Text of the thesis
  • Endnotes and/or footnotes (may be included in the text)
  • Appendices (if appropriate)
  • References

The thesis pages should be numbered in consecutive order with Arabic numerals, starting with the first page of text and continuing through to the last page of the entire thesis, including endnotes/footnotes, appendices and references. Pages preceding the text, starting with the first page of the abstract should be numbered consecutively with lower-case Roman numerals.

The title page of the thesis must contain the Universal Copyright Notice©.

To-Do To-Day

Editing, in order of importance:
  • Carefully re-read conclusion
  • Quickly read chapter 1, except for the new paragraph (proof read this)
  • Quickly read chapter 4, but make sure I accomplish what I say I will (mention ideal forms in chapter intro?)
  • Quickly read chapter 3 (ideal forms mention?)
  • Quickly read through chapter 2
  • Check bibliography for completeness
  • Make sure filmography is ready to go
  • Edit TOC
  • Re-read abstract
  • Prepare title page

More Technical Stuff:
  • Put together in one file, making Roman Num and Arabic Nums work out, and making footnote numbers begin anew in each chapter (or do endnotes instead?)
  • Make sure page numbers are kosher
  • Burn onto CD and be ready for printers by 10am

Waiting on:
  • New feedback on intro from third reader
  • Any word from traveling-advisor?

Submission Progress Update (Boring)

OK - all of the chapters that went through major revamps have now been thoroughly edited, so the basic urgent work is done. Still no word from third reader or advisor, so I continue along with more editing in the less troublesome chapters (some of which have basically been fully formed for nearly a year now and have been read a million times).

One more proof read for chapter 1, 2, 3 and 4 (about 200 pages), with another careful run through the conclusion.

Then I have to triple check the bibliography and deal with the filmography.

Then I have to proof the table of contents and re-read the abstract, and fix the page numbers.

Then, if there be no more trouble from my readers on the intro, etc, I can go ahead and put it together on CD for printing... Cripes. I forgot to check whether I had any blank CDs on hand. YIKES!

*please, please, please...*

On Second Thought...

I refuse to concede defeat to such a raging douchebag.

He can cram it with walnuts.

I Can't Do This

I admit defeat. I do not have the mental/emotional/tangible resources to do this thing. I am so lost right now trying to fix this pile of garbage, knowing that whatever I produce will just win me more ridicule and contempt. I can't do this. I can't. It's shit, and there's nothing I can do about that - not in three days, not in three years.

I'm just too stupid.

Abstract (Feedback Request)

This dissertation analyzes approximately 50 American films that feature predominantly heterosexual interfaith/intercultural romantic, sexual or marital relations between Jewish and Gentile protagonists. It asks what political or social ideals can be illustrated by these portrayals, and how these films can be taken cumulatively to explore trends in modern life. The author places liberalism at the heart of the mainstream Hollywood discourse on intermarriage, and shows how films that run counter to the expectations of liberal romances may reflect communitarian critiques of liberal tenets. It is then explained how both liberal and communitarian drives stem from a quest for the authentic in modern life, but via different views of what constitutes authenticity.

The issue of intermarriage is contextualized with a discussion of the endogamous tradition in Judaism, and by an exploration of American liberalism. Tools used to read the films include genre theory, representational discourses and Thomas Wartenberg’s narrative theory of the unlikely couple in film as a mode of social critique. Main political philosophy theorists engaged include Michael Waltzer and Charles Taylor. Some of the key films explored are Keeping the Faith (2000), the 1927 and 1980 versions of The Jazz Singer, and Crossing Delancey (1988).

This dissertation does not argue that these films are made with explicitly liberal or communitarian goals, but that they are evocative of the efforts of modern Americans to establish an authentic self, and, thus, a good life. While close reading of the films themselves was the main goal and method of the work, the author makes suggestions for ways in which future work can examine the impact of these films on the Jewish community, especially in terms of gender relations.

Drawing on scholarship of the Jewish image in film, this work builds on previous knowledge in the fields of Jewish cultural studies and film studies by giving extensive attention to the intimate relations between Jews and Gentiles. By addressing not only the Hollywood “happy ending” but also the negative outcomes, this work advances new ways of seeing resistance to universalizing tendencies in romance and a critique of the historically dominant liberal ideology in American film.

KEY TERMS: AUTHENTICITY; COMMUNITARIANISM; CULTURAL STUDIES; ENDOGAMY; EXOGAMY; FILM STUDIES; GENDER STUDIES; HOLLYWOOD; INTERMARRIAGE; JEWISH STUDIES; JEWS IN FILM; JUDAISM; LIBERALISM; MODERNITY; REPRESENTATION OF DIFFERENCE; ROMANCE; SEXUALITY

Defence Questions

Starting next week, I need to start reading widely and thinking about defence questions/answers. I have a bunch of hints from my committee about things they will likely ask, from their margin notes, etc., so I will run with these and set myself others.

The plan is to make one post a day on various issues, topics and questions regarding my dissertation so that I can have these thoughts organized.

PLEASE HELP! Leave inquiries in the comments or email them to me, so that I can get a bunch of different perspectives on these things.

Thanks!

Progress Report

(Not that you all should want to know this, but it helps me to get this stuff out to process it.)

Chapters 1, 2, 3 and 4 are generally done and sent in to advisor (though there is one small issue to fix with chapter 1, and I have to rethink the intro to chapter 4), and abstract and works cited are pretty much - abstract will go through one more re-read, I think, and works cited needs to be double checked to make sure everything in there is still in the text after recent cuts and make sure everything recently added to the text is in the works cited.

So, doing chapter 5 today, and possibly the conclusion. Intro still needs a ton of work, so that is main priority after chapter 5 and conclusion - I want to send the intro off by tomorrow night if at all possible, so I can get one more round of comments before Wednesday morning (with luck).

I also still need to edit/finalize the table of contents, check the title page for university format standards (and slap on the copyright protection), and finish filling out the filmography notations. Then, as the last stage, I need to make sure all the page numbers line up, and then put it all together in one, massive 320 page Word file for CD to take to the printers.

Goal is to have two printed copies all ready to skim at noon on the first, so I can drop it off to the university Powers by 3pm on Thursday (April 1).

(All this with Passover starting tomorrow night, but this year I might have to cut corners on those festivities, sadly.)

GO GO GO!

dammit

Spending days looking at R3's derisive and demoralizing comments is wearing me down. I think I am having a crisis of faith in this dissertation, but there's not much to do but just get the submission over with and see how it all turns out.

I hate the fact that I have let him cause me to hate this dissertation, but it really seems like junk to me now.

Is it normal to really want the defence to be over so you can just burn your crappy dissertation and forget about it?

Because that's where I am at right now.

yep

SCOWL

Every Email Brings New Pain

ARRRGGHH! Sent the "final" draft of chapter 1 off last night, only to receive MORE notes from my advisor this morning on yet another scholar I should look into.

Do these people not realize I am trying to finish this damn thing, something that will not happen if they do not stop making suggestions!?!?!?!?! ARGH!

OK. Back to work...

ETA: Figured out emergency edits here - reduce the three paragraphs on the major Jewish streams' attitudes towards intermarriage and add a paragraph on the waining influence of the Jewish denominations on Jewish Americans. Hopefully, this will be a half hour/45 minute task.

But, I swear, further emergency edits at this stage, and some advisor is going to get such a... a... frowning at my monitor while I thank her and do what she says. But, man, what a SCOWL I will have on my face. That'll show her. GRRR.

Adventures with Tot

Sprout just saw some Spongebob for the first time (I have resisted, since it is so damn hyper-active, I didn't think it was a good choice for very little kids). He hid behind the bed, and just slowly shook his head at it, and was very pleased when I stopped the disk. Two years old, and already picky.

I just gave him his allowance - two one dollar coins, as every Wednesday. He is currently running around the house with it in his Hallowe'en bucket, and in a bit it will be time to "feed the piggy."

He's a constant source of amusement, that kid. :)

These are not Lemurs

A little ticked - was up waiting for someone's rough draft last night until 2am, but finally gave up. Come to find out, they didn't even send it until 3.30am. I am sure glad I didn't wait up.

It's a rough day.

I'm a Tool

Just had to email the Third Reader. The email he sent me over a week ago with edits on my introduction made mention of an attachment, but there is not one. I just tonight realized this meant he forgot to send it. So, a week later, I was forced to email him and ask. Which makes me look AWESOME.

I really have to pick up the pace on the edits.

I will. Starting tomorrow. Promise.

Move on Down the Road

YAY! Just finished my batch of marking. I have another 70 to do starting tomorrow, but this one is done, at least. (Plus, dissertation edits for April 1 start in earnest in there somewhere was well, now that I have all my feedback in. sigh.)

OK. Time to do some final bits and pieces, and then it's off to bed to snuggle the Sprout for a few precious and warm-comfy hours before I have to get back up and start all over again.

Chugga chugga chugga...

Random

In the grocery store today, I saw a mom who was basically snapping at her daughter for everything. The girl was, I'd guess, about 8 to 10 years old. According to the mom, the girl didn't drive the cart right, was too loud, didn't check the eggs before putting them in the cart, etc., etc. The girl was clearly trying to be helpful, but the mom was just such a grouch. A little while later, this girl came running up to me with Sprout's hat, as he had ditched it along the way somewhere in the store. I thanked her very sincerely. She seemed like a nice, helpful, energetic child. I wish the mom hadn't been so snappy at her.

I am reminded that, though children can get on your nerves by their attempts to help when you are busy/crabby/tired/rushed/etc, they really should be encouraged in their efforts.

This made me much more cheerful with Sprout's rather hazardous habit of forcing his assistance on me in putting away the groceries. I smiled and thanked him. Children often have such caring natures, as long as they aren't discouraged from it.

Anyway - it's been a very good day, and I am extra head over heels for the little guy today.

Hope you all are enjoying the weather!

tired

I am sleepy, but oddly wired... yet too brain dead to do anything productive. I'm also hungry, but I can't make food without waking the pooper, so sigh on that one.

Presentation went well - advisor was pleased, so I "passed."

Here's something better than this lame post for you to read.

Something Springy and Cheerful

Ides of March

Well, some furious emailing back and forth, and to and fro, and some air has been cleared. Turns out, Reader 3 actually reckoned I knew he was only offering "food for thought," and would not take his criticism so seriously. WTH?

Well, in the end, he has already signed off on the dissertation and basically thinks belittling me is the way to improve my writing. Because, you know, feeling like a total loser does great things for your academic output.

sigh.

Well, he's getting a huge truck of salt with his feedback from now on.

And my day better start looking better.
I'm so depressed. Not having a good day. Not at all.

Savaged

My third reader is a brutal son of a bitch. "Is this your attempt at being clever?" he snipes snidely in the comments. He clearly doesn't think this work is worth a PhD, as if that was some precious thing that needed to be guarded by his asshole version of a Vestal Virgin.

His position is that I don't know what I'm talking about, and that I execute it all poorly. He is rude, nasty and smug. And just plain mean.

All of this while, of course, making a slew of comments he could have made back in December. But, no, he chose to wait until two weeks before the thing is due, after the rest of the committee has read and improved it all along. He is late to the party and wants to make sure he gets to throw his weight around, I guess.

I HATE HIM... SO MUCH.

rut-ro

I still have a mountain of stuff to do - so much, in fact, I have a hard time deciding where to dig in. This was not made better by the fact that I accidentally fell asleep last night while putting the tot to bed.

STUPID TIME CHANGE. ARGH.

OK... tutoring stuff, marking stuff, presentation, revised intro draft... AND GO!

You Know, Babies are Hardly Babies

I've said it myself a hundred times, "I'm just being a baby." "He's such a baby."

But, if being a baby means whining over little things or things that can't be changed, etc., we really should just say "He's being such an adult," because babies are pretty darned tough little creatures.

My evidence for this: My 2 year old has a pretty awful head cold, as do I. While I am sitting here, unmotivated and drippy and dull, he is working his butt off to play and enjoy himself, even while breathing like a bull dog wearing nose plugs.

He can also fall and land on his head and keep on trucking, whereas that would have me on my back for at least a day. He also gets about a million things taken from him in the run of a day (by me when he is grabbing things he shouldn't), yet he's still a pretty happy little character, over all.

Where did we get this expression? Before having a child, I never really thought about it, but now I see it is bunk.

We should be so lucky as to be as tough and determined as babies.

Just thought I would share my random thoughts for the day.

UPDATE

No major re-writes are going to happen. I am backed by my main advisor on this, and am not planning on budging. There are a couple things I can change, but that's it.

So there.

Shaken

What if I re-do this thing and he still flunks it?

What am I doing? Which way should I go? How the hell can I concentrate on my stupid rinky-dink lecture requirement if the damn dissertation is going to fail, anyway?

I don't know what to do.

I am so scared.

All Outta Love...

I am completely without motivation to do anything with the dissertation, and yet I have so much to do I have no idea which way to turn with it.

I have not heard back from my main supervisor on the issues my third reader has that will spark yet another re-write, even after main supervisor had pretty much cleared it for take-off and set dates. So, now I really don't feel like moving a muscle on the re-writes until I hear from her.

So... WTF?

gah.

Cold Comfort

We've both been hit by a case of the spring sniffles... and sneezes... and coughs. The lovely change of weather does come with a price.

Today, the tot took great care today to put his dolly, Max, in bed for a nap - he covered him with the baby quilt, wiped his little plastic nose with a hanky, and kissed his cheek "g'night." I have to say, it nearly killed me not to chuckle and ruin the moment. It was very sweet.

So, it seems that even Max is sick. Must be quite the cold if it strikes even in the heart of the Cabbage Patch.

Losing My Brain

I have student loan forms to get in today (to keep me from having to make $800 payments every month while still in school - I sent these in only to get the "missing some information" letter), a stupid workplace safety certificate to get the paper work in for which I thought was taken care of (mandatory to save my job), bills suddenly due (didn't expect that today, and have not enough dough to really cover this - paying credit cards with credit cards now), 50 papers to mark (with some reading to do before I can do this), teaching apps due on Monday, a public lecture to finish by Wednesday (upon which my degree's completion depends), a NEW draft of my introduction to be done (this from the third reader who has given me no feedback the last three months who suddenly contacted me today with this bright news) - just two weeks before I have to submit the completed dissertation to enable me to defend and graduate, an article to submit for publication this upcoming week, a rough draft to edit for my tutoring student, and RA work that must be done ASAP.

OK... Not... to... panic...

I want to smoke from every orifice I posses.

$%&*&#HFNNASJNSDJN^^&!((!&@##~1!

I am going off my rocker.

Readers need to give a student feedback on the first draft - NOT BE ASKING FOR RE-WRITES ON THE LAST FRIGGING DRAFT.

IT IS NOT MY FAULT YOU DIDN'T READ THE FIRST TWO DRAFTS I SENT YOU, STARTING THREE AND A HALF MONTHS AGO. YOU KNOW, BACK WHEN I SHOULD HAVE BEEN GETTING THIS FEEDBACK FROM YOU.

JESUS H. CHRIST.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH!

Calm Blue Ocean

Harassed at every corner, by aggravating students and bill collectors and student loan paper work and dissertation crap, along with that stupid poison control certification thingy through campus which is pretty damn stupid for someone who never uses chemicals in her work, the intrepid student/mom sallies forth into the world to try to sort her life out. If, that is, she can get away from the overdue vital email exchange with one of her readers that seems to be suddenly crucial to her submission deadline...

Fashion Update

I found a lovely dark aqua loose linen shirt, with a bright kelly green cami to wear underneath so it shows at the neck, a coffee-brown tiered skirt that is just so comfortable and flowy, and very dark brown opaque stockings. I also splurged on a aqua/green/purple/white bled gauze head scarf that matches it all perfectly. (Bled is sort of like tie-dye, but not tacky.) I even bought new undies! I plan on wearing my cardigan as a coat if it's not cold enough for my trench, but it will go as soon as I get there, likely. With all this, my clogs and simple silver Star of David should bring it all together.

Thanks for all the advice. I hadn't thought of blues very much, as for some reason I don't usually go that way, but I wanted something that could incorporate a nice touch of green (for St Pat's) - blues really bring down the redness in my cheeks, which is a blessing, indeed. The lady at the store was very good about helping me put things together, and the effect is smart yet comfortable and feminine, and the colours are really great for this time of year.

I look like a million in it (even if I do say so myself), and feel a ton more confident about this lecture!

THANKS!

ANNOUNCEMENT

OK, I already had my public lecture scheduled for March 17, at 4pm.

But now I have a defence date set up, as long as I can pay off all my tuition between now and then, and get the pre-defence draft to Grad Studies by April 1/2.

Ready...?

May 21, 2010

at 8am.

So, by noon, if all goes correctly, I will be done (or at least with some minor edits before I submit for binding, which is normal).

The tradition is that you become "doctor" at the verdict of the defence. So, May 21 may bring on a Brand New Me.

But, really? 8am? WHY?

...

SKEEEEERED.

Fashion Advice, Please

I'm a schlub. I dress awful. I look like a clean hobo most of the time.

And most of the time, this doesn't upset me. I don't like to clothes shop, and I don't really have the money to blow on clothes, so as long as I am generally presentable, comfortable, covered adequately and clean, I accept this about myself.

However, I have two career-type things coming up, and I want to look competent and grown up. So, I turn to you for advice.

The first event is a public lecture (the "public defence") for my dissertation completion. For this, I must talk for 50 minutes and have about 30-60 minutes of Q&A for members of the public on my dissertation, which is on Jewishness and film (romance, mostly). (I mention the subject matter, in case this alters the fashion advice, as I have no clue upon what these things are based.)

For this, I was thinking I might go professional but personal. I never wear skirts. Ever. But I thought of a long black skirt (I like those tiered kind), with black tights and shoes. My folks got me two fantastic heavy cardigans which look smart and adult, so I thought to wear one of those (one is camel and the other is black with flecks of cole). I thought a bright, jewel toned turtleneck would be nice under this (possibly green, as I look good in red, but I tend to get red faced when agitated). I wear a headcovering for religious purposes, and have a couple nicer ones, and will choose that based on the colour of the shirt. Does this sound at all appropriate for this kind of event?

My second event is the academic defence. For this I thought an oxford shirt and a pair of black dress pants, with whichever cardigan I don't wear to the public lecture. This defence is at 8am, so basically I want simple, but grown up.

I also never wear makeup, though I did when I was in theatre, and I do look ok in it. I plan on going very light with it, if I wear it at all. Do you all think make-up is essential for a 31 year old female who wants to appear grownup and professional and in control, etc? Does not wearing makeup (tastefully done) harm my credibility, do you think?

I know a PhD has no swimsuit competition or anything, and isn't about looks, but I really want to leave a good impression on these folks, as I am now moving into "real job seeking" times. Also, since I will have interviews (I hope) and graduation events in the near future, it is also a good idea to have some nice things on hand, instead of my usual schlumpy thrift store bell bottoms and bargain shop tees. But I find I am completely out of the loop on these matters.

So, please, any help would be great. What are some nice styles that one can achieve on a budget for these kinds of professional events?

I am at your mercy!

restless

I wish I had something fun to do. The weather is so nice, and I am forcing myself to not open the dissertation files today. I want some excitement... Cheap excitement.

Over the next week, this is on the docket:
  • Job application for March 15. (Decided to go a head with it even though I no longer stand a chance at being convocated by the time the job starts. WTH? It's free to apply.)
  • Prepare my public defence lecture and powerpoint, and choose the clips.
  • Find a nice shirt to wear to public lecture. Possibly a skirt, too. :-o
  • Mark assignment 4 for the course I am IAing for this month.
  • Finish RA report.
  • Edit works cited and expand filmography notations.
  • Write dissertation abstract.
  • Prepare old intro to send to a journal for publication.
  • Do some student loan stuff, and possibly tax return.
  • Re-read dissertation after a few days away from it.
  • Skim through all my research notes to make sure I didn't forget to add/ref any points.
  • Clean apartment and do some baking.

So, that will keep me busy for the next week. But what to do NOW?

Some "In Yo Face" BF Pride

Lilypie Breastfeeding tickers

Got a little ticker from a friend who is working to promote the public profile of extended breastfeeding, so I thought to add it (to the left and above).

I never really thought of myself as an "extended breastfeeder," but I guess at 2 years and one week, that's what we are doing now.

Represent, yo!

(You can get your own neat baby-related (etc) tickers at Lilypie.)

February Wrap Up

So, I kind of dropped off there, but I was honestly very busy.

Some things of note since I disappeared from the blogging world:

- Tot's birthday was awesome. So good, in fact, he now "plays birthday" every afternoon, complete with funny hat and noisemakers.

- 2 year doctor's appt was great. He's now about 2'11" and weighs in around 26lbs. Doctor says all is well, and no need to come back for another checkup until the 3 year mark!

- Still have not heard back, re: teaching. Sigh.

- Still working on tuition issues. Double sigh.

- Trying to have Draft 4 in on Monday... and it is now already Sunday. eep.

OK... BACK TO WORK!

Yep.

So Far...

Now down to a lean 307 pages and 85 102 words.

A couple things to trim and a few footnotes to add, but I think (hope) this sucker is falling into place.

It better be, because April 1, it's shipping out to the external.

Should I take April 1st as being meaningful...?
