When it Rains...

Well, what started out as a generalized blah and a few sneezes last night seems to have become a full blown cold this morning. My head, eyes, muscles and everything else hurt, and my lungs seem to be back to constantly smelling like processed meat to me. How could this have happened in just a few hours? So not fair.

Of all the times I can NOT afford to get sick - well, I just should have known. Why would fate waste a cold on a week when I don't have a conference and a major exam coming up?

It's perfect, really.

***

Oh, and how can someone this cute be so worried all the time?

4.30am

Do you think my 8am alarm is a little too optimistic at this point?

3.30am

kill me

3am

Trying to sleep on the sofa, but it isn't working. I can't sleep in the bedroom due to the presence of two alarming centipedes in there yesterday. Now I have some lights on to keep the bugs at bey (and to keep a look out for them), I am coming down off my hyperness, stress/tension/drama/solitaire has driven me mad, and I think I feel centipedes crawling over me while I try to force myself to sleep.

Why do I even bother? The day was pretty promising just hours ago, but now all I have is a gut ache and a horrible sense of dread.

Next stop: Dropping out and running away to join the circus.

Bouncing off the Walls

I don't know what it is, either the bugs, the fear over the upcoming exam, the nice chat I had with Catherine on the phone, or the reintroduction of coffee into my life, but I am wired... Or maybe it was the fact that Murph was jumping up and down on a trampoline while on the phone with me this afternoon, which is far too cute an image for my mind not to latch onto.

In any case, I may not sleep for days.

Nerves Kick In

Do you have any idea how much I have left to do in the next two weeks?

Am really trying not to lose molecular cohesion over this... And the house centipede I found crawling on my CEILING as soon as my eyes opened this morning did not help at all.

ARGH!

Postscript: I JUST FOUND ONE IN MY BED. I had to track him down by pulling back the covers, and finally fought him off and beat him into submission with my copy of Four Major Plays by Ibsen. SO HORRIBLE. I guess I will not be in that room for a while now...

Further Signs of the Apocalypse

Well, hell has frozen over. Murph now has a cell phone. The only weirder thing would be if I found out Runyon submitted his columns via a Black Berry.

So I guess it is up to me alone to keep pay phones in business now. If Murph can fall, anyone can...

So... is Amanda Paris Hilton in this Situation?

It is all bump and go around here, with the dearly departed site OMGJeremy.com, which recently bit the big server in the sky due to pilot error. It seems that the eponymous Jeremy, who broke his site, has bad mouthed us at The Swank Puppy all over his MySpace page. It seems that those (lovable and rational) rats that are deserting the sinking ship at OMGJ have just decided to stick with Swank now, and forget the wreck that was, and he is all over upset.

He never trashed me personally (I am certainly not trendy enough to get bitch e-slapped by a -Z list celebrity), but he trashed the site I am attached to and Amanda. But I am not so angry about the situation as I am appalled.

The point here is that he is a grown man talking trash about people on his MYSPACE! Does he also wonder when his boobies will grow in and if Todd in Chem 1 likes him?

Some people grow up and some people don't... I guess that is the gist of life.

Shout Out

I had a fine lunch today with my old MA friend Jenn, who I find reads this blog, but who never comments. (I am so broken up, I will actually use a completely lame ":(" emoticon - do you not see that I am serious?)

However, she is very well-versed about the characters and plots of my life. I will have to make sure I have something juicy for her soon.

So tune in next time, folks...

(Thanks for lunch, Jenn!)

Strange

One woman covers her head for her convictions. Another walks around with her ass cheeks hanging out. Which one should be the embarrassed one?

Not Much to Say

Really, doesn't everyone have times in their lives when they'd just rather sleep for a few days?

It's Tuesday!

I wonder if bowling has "seasons." Let's just hope, if it does, the season goes into over time this year.

For an Uncle Lost

Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay.

Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.

Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

- Christina Rossetti

You will be missed, Great Uncle Frank.
Rest in peace.

The Rain's a Good Companion

Went for my first long rain walk of the season. I walked a while around places I haven't been since last November. It poured hard. A beautiful rain, kicking up mist and the smell of the soil, dripping off trees and driving into my face. The best kind.

For a long while, there was another rain-walker out there. I knew he was out for the rain - he didn't run like most people do when it comes down like that. He walked on his side of the street, and I walked on mine. Neither of us were in a hurry. We smoked and walked. I didn't get a good look at him, because the rain was pouring in my eyes; he might have been 20 or 40 for all I knew. But I knew he was a kindred spirit. Long black hair and a long black coat, he could have been me in a different universe.

Eventually, the rain let up and I took a corner towards home. I wonder what his name was, or if he was going anywhere in particular... I like to think he was just there for the rain.

When rain-walkers run into other rain-walkers, it's a mixed emotion. On one hand, it's nice to have the companionship, and rain-walkers are rare. On the other hand, rain-walkers are the type to like their solitude. That's the beauty of the rain. Most people run away from it and leave the streets deserted. They don't know that the rain is companion enough, if you love it.

But now the rain has ended, and I am without companion again, left to wonder why there are no more crows out on Glasgow Street, and where they went.

Shhhh... We're Being Watched...

Today is an odd day - the breeze is gorgeous, but there is an underlying nasty humidity, and, if I am not mistaken, a storm is a brewing. To keep from stifling in my apartment, I have been forced to pull up the blinds a bit in my ground floor apartment. I haven't lived at ground floor in nearly ten years, so this is a difficult thing for me. Sometimes I see people's faces turned directly at my windows when they walk by. I don't like it at all.

Even worse, the dead-common neighbours next door, who it seems will be permanently ensconced on their porch this summer, have aimed their deck chairs straight at my apartment like I am a spectator sport and they are about to do the wave. Well, they likely spend the whole rest of their waking hours staring at a TV screen, so I guess it is in their blood to sit and gawk at something - lest they think, you know. But I shouldn't worry, those same years of slack jawed TV goggling probably also left them with a complete inability to absorb any information whatsoever, so I am likely safe. I could assassinate the pope in here, right in front of the window, and they likely wouldn't remember a crime being committed, let alone be able to identify either of us.

But, still... It is creepy and wrong, and makes me say again, "Man, summer rots!"

Remember, in Kitchener, the trashies watch YOU.

Make a Little Love. Do a Little Reading. Exercize the Whole You!

World Book Day is here, again (celebrated in March in Ireland and the UK).

International Book Day was started by booksellers in Catalonia in 1923 to commemorate the deaths of both Shakespeare and Cervantes (April 23, 1616), and coincides with their Lovers' Day, which is traditionally celebrated by the exchange of flowers and books... Seems that they know which is the true sexiest organ, huh?

Have fun!

Reflections

It is quiet here, except for the ticking clock. Murph just fell asleep on the phone, something we haven't been able to do in a long time, since he was in West Virginia. It was nice to baby him after his long night and morning spent on a Greyhound, only to come back and find more aggravations. Sometimes, people need to be fussed over - it is good for the soul.

Now I am drinking my bottle of water and soon will hit the hay, myself. It has been a good day - nothing major happened, no lottery strikes or anything. But I ate well, and it was a day of successes (study went really well) and sweetness (Murph and I watched a movie together over the phone - don't laugh unless you've tried to make a date work over a thousand miles). A good day.

There is a slight strangeness about me tonight, including a bizarre sugar craving of the sort that can only be caused by a radioactive ant bite or something, but other than that, I can't describe the strangeness, really... If I didn't know myself better, I would almost call it happiness.

Yes. Happiness and optimism. Kind of foreign feelings, but there they are.

Good night world. Sleep tight.

And good night, Murph. Even angels need their rest once in a while.

You fell in love from a distance. His/her blog or profile struck you and you knew that even though you had never met, you were totally meant to be. This is a great way to fall in love because you get to know the person before you meet. Don't be too disappointed though if he/she does not turn out to be everything you imagined. Summer Stinks

Man, I hate to see the warm weather back again, because with it, invariably, comes the trashies out on their decks, lawns, porches, steps, etc., etc., yelling at their kids (who all seem to be named Tyler, no matter what their gender is), barbecuing the latest corpse fixins, and blasting as much Aerosmith as any one should be expected to take...

Say what you will about winter, but at least it keeps people IN DOORS.

(Oh, and good luck to Murph, who undertakes yet another cross-country journey tonight back from West Virginia to Ohio - here's hoping it takes less than 24 hours this time. Oh, Greyhound!)

Hard Times in Russia

Today, though I hate to commemorate such a thing here, is Adolf Hitler's birthday. Once a major festival for the Nazis, the Fuehrerstag was basically Good Friday, Easter, Christmas and Fourth of July all wrapped up into one. A day (a week, really) to worship the leader and re-dedicate themselves to the National Socialist madness. Volksdeutsch came from all over the Reich to Berlin to celebrate the birth of their savior.

Thankfully, those days are gone, and Berlin no longer is streamed with the red and black of the hacked and butchered cross of the Nazis. Yet, even decades after the fall of the Party and Hitler's ultimate betrayal of his people, his birthday is rising again -- this time in a disillusioned and impoverished Russia.

Russia, once a powerful force in stopping Hitler, has now fallen into the clutches of a surge in neo-fascist violence. Apparently forgetting what their nation suffered at the hands of the Nazis, young Russians have been flocking to National Socialism, and this week is now marked by hate crimes and vandalism, almost as a matter of course, as gangs of so-called "hooligans" take their anger to the streets, seemingly without official limitations.

And what have Russian authorities done to keep citizens safe during this week of angst? They have officially requested that all foreigners and minorities (including Russia's beleaguered and dwindling Jewish population, as well as exchange students and Russian-born Roma) just stay indoors for the weekend. Just stock-pile groceries, don't leave your homes, and wait it out. Some campuses have even gone so far as to lock students in their rooms to prevent them from being harmed should they dare leave the safety of their designated doors and windows.

What the hell is wrong with that picture?

So, go out today. All of us who are lucky enough not to be in Russia, go outside. Glory in being whatever and whoever you are, and get some air. But do think about those poor souls who won't be so lucky for the next few days.

And know that such a thing ultimately imprisons us all.

Now It Begins in Earnest

Well, the final count-down to comp exam started today as all my adrenalin finally started to kick in for final prep. I am feeling ok about it all, actually. Also, that PR company that offered to send me free stuff for plugging their movie finally came through today - way to go! The first time one of those offers actually resulted in free stuff. Very neat - I think I like being a shill.

OH MY GOSH!

I forgot TWO IMPORTANT THINGS! I can't believe I did that!

April 16th was Charlie Chaplin's 118th birthday!

and...

April 17th was
MY TWO YEAR BLOGOVERSARY!

How could I have missed those things? Blame it on stress, I guess, but that's just awful.

The First Year

Taking a noodle break and cruising the net before getting back to work, I hit upon some random "healthy marriage" self-help spots. Now, most of the stuff I found was pretty self-explanatory, such as "Don't show contempt for you mate." (I could add to that, "Don't FEEL contempt for your mate, since you married the guy," but I'm just going to hope they meant that folded in with the performance aspects.) But I figured it wouldn't hurt to get a bit of "expert" advice, or at least to see somethings we all know set down in writing, as reminders.

There was a lot of advice for those of us in "The First Year," (example) which, according to the experts, is supposed to be the most hellish, as it is a period of adjustment. Personally, I wonder if that first year of retirement might not be worse, since it will involve looking at your changed partner in a brand new way, all day, while dealing with your own changing self-image. But that we shall see.

I don't talk a lot about my marriage on this blog in any direct or theoretical way. I suppose this is partly because Murph and I express our marriage's state of the union to each other enough that I don't really feel the need to talk about it here, which I think is a good thing. However, sometimes it is wise to contemplate the theory of marriage. (And I really hope he doesn't mind me talking about it here...)

Murph and I have, I believe, the makings of a truly classic marriage. If I didn't believe this, I likely would not have married him. There are many elements to our union that really strike me as "signs," though I hesitate to use that language. We were attracted to each right from the first, and knew we were ear-marked for each other really early on in our friendship. I feel positive and optimistic about our life together.

That having been said, however, we do have some pretty titanic fights. Well, not fights so much as dramatic disagreements. We always seem to end up pushing the same buttons on each other in the same way. I suppose we will continue doing that until either the buttons get desensitized or we actually learn to avoid them. This makes sense to me, though, because, even though we are as joined at the hip as we are at the heart, we are also very unique individuals with our own very distinct minds on things. We are also both fiercely stubborn people, with our own intellects and modes of expression. However, sometimes I think our main problems come as much from being too alike in essentials as they do from being too different in content, if that makes sense.

In any case, these self-help things are rather off for us, as our first year is a pretty abnormal one, since we don't have the chance to live in the same place. Of course people get into fights over chat and phone! It is easy to fight when you can't see the other person's eyes or body posture, just as it is hard to end a fight without just being able to offer a hug. When Murph and I are together, fights are easy to deal with - touching goes a long way to foster forgiveness.

As it is, though, in this time of distance, I have one major technique for dealing with my marriage woes. When we are fighting, I remove my wedding ring. Now, this might sound pretty horrendous, but hear me out.

Some say that the primary affirmation for Muslims, the Shahadah ("There is no G-d but Allah, and Mohammad is His Prophet") has a higher purpose than just saying the words. What it does is, before you embrace Allah, you have to first contemplate, even for a second, "There is no G-d." This is supposed to foster a sense of relief and joy when you get to follow through with "... but Allah." I get this, though clearly I don't get the same sense from that line as do Muslims. But the practice makes sense to me. This is the principle I work by.

So, when things are rough between Murph and I, I remove my wedding ring and look at my hand without it. It always looks so sad and forlorn, that I have to put it back on. This always brings a feeling of relief and joy. It is a reminder: No matter how uncomfortable, annoying or crummy this fight may be, think of life without this marriage... without even these fights. That usually gives me all the strength I need to carry on.

These self-help sites... I guess they are ok, especially if one just uses them for casual browsing and reminders, and doesn't take them too seriously. Often, they are better as "What we are doing right" pats on the back then for "How to fix what is wrong" prescriptions.

I guess the main thing I need to remember and concentrate on is, "Murph is my husband; I am his wife. I love him, and I am grateful for our marriage. No matter what the circumstances of the day are, I am lucky to have what I have, because I could be without him entirely."

That can be my daily affirmation.

"Your call my be recorded for quality assurance."

(3 minutes elapse.)

"Please stay on the line to speak with the next available representative."

(And so forth...)

(20 minutes pass.)

"We appreciate your patience. Your call will be forwarded to the next available representative as soon as one becomes available."

(5 minutes elapse.)

Me: EXPLETIVE!

BANG!

(Hangs up phone and sends up random curses against the banking industry in my heart.)

I mean, I love Carole King as much as the next person, but 40 minutes of being on hold is safely my limit.

Some Web Toons for You

In lieu of a proper post, try some of these on for size. Catherine introduced them to me years ago, but I forgot about them until tonight, when I was looking at my link list. Well, I didn't forget about them, really -- sadly, that theme song will never, ever, be far from my thoughts.

And, from the same author, there's the even better (in my opinion) Big Bunny.

Happy Birthday Rick Moranis!

Well, now that that got you all worked up, I don't know where to take you...

I am in a bit of a working jag right now. Murph helped me pound out a brand new idea for the dissertation proposal, and it is taking a lot of my brain processor right now.

Suffice it to say, that I am as happy as I can be right now, and I am hopeful that things are looking up.

Wonders Never Cease...

Signs of the Apocalypse...

- I didn't update this blog last night at midnight, because, (GET THIS!) I was ASLEEP. Yes, I went for a nap at 11pm, and didn't wake up until 7am this morning. You're looking at a girl who got her first Full Eight Hour Sleep in maybe three months. Not bad, eh?

- The reason I got this miraculous sleep, I think, is because yesterday, for the first time in a long time, I was pretty relaxed. I was all alone, without even people available to me online, but I was ok with that. There was no antsy pacing, no nothing. I watched a couple movies, I did a little work, I read, I went to bed... I think I might be getting the hang of "Living by Myself" racket. Of course, as I was taking my nap, the wind made me nervous that someone was breaking in a few times, but I didn't freak out. I take that as some sort of victory.

- For once, my financial situation DOESN'T look like the end of the world.

Could this be the start of an era filled with a happier, more stable Holly, nightmare-free and confident about the world? Not very likely, really. But today I feel ok.

And that's pretty not bad.

New Enjoyment

Well, by Murph's suggestion, I started listening to these guys on their website, and I really dug them. Funny, catchy... They have been the soundtrack to my weekend. They offer a few blushes here and there, and they may be pure male adolescence, but I like them.

Imagine my surprize to find the Bloodhound Gang are the same guys dressed as monkeys that I used to scorn once upon a time! Well, I guess I should have listened to them, rather than just dismissed them.

I forgot the rule of thumb: A professional in a monkey suit is still a professional.

I Suffer for my Studies

I may be the last person on earth to see this slightly-overrated picture, but it seemed like something everyone keeps talking about, so I figured I'd bite the bullet.

It's ok, actually. It held my attention well, at least. (Though I admit that I started drifting away when Adam Goldberg's character died.) And any religious studies person would enjoy the CONSTANT prayer (even while doing horrendous things) in this movie. It makes an interesting contrast to all those people who say "The Arabs" are evil to fight in the name of their religion, so it was a good thing to see, I guess. However, going from all that woozy-does-it camera moves and bangy-whizzy explosions to real life is hurting my brain. My eyes feel like wobbly sacks of slime. Hurts. So. Much.

However, the picture did give me an idea of how we can get a certain someone out of Ohio... Anyone want to grab a few rounds of amo and help me gather up a rescue squad?

How does Saving Private Murph sound?

Still in There

OK, folks, The Save Holly From Eviction Telethon continues, with a chance for a bit of summer work rearing its blessed head today, what looks like a tidy contribution to come from the Tax Man (yes, I am actually praising that poor guy), and a line on a Student Line of Credit (if I can arrange for a co-sign from home). Now, if I can still squeeze that student loan for one more term's worth of tuition, I think I will be alright. So, I'm hanging in there. Not licked yet, and I have no intention of going down without a damn good fight!

It's like a patchwork quilt, my financial situation... But you know what, when you're cold, a patchwork quilt does the job, right?

Stern Proctor Rides Again

Today, Friday the 13th, bright and EARLY, the students of the class I TA for write their final exam, and I, as the assistant, get to step in and invigilate.

I hate invigilating in some ways. Aside from the standard moments of hassle and annoyance ("I forgot a pen! OMG!"), half of it is as boring as heck (broken by odd urges to just start shouting or laughing because the tension and the silence starts to get to you), and the other half is rather shaming in an odd way. There is something in the eyes of students as they look at you, their tormentor.

I always feel like I am the guy stuck guarding suspects in a Gestapo HQ waiting room. It's not my fault they are there, but it sure seems like I am to blame.

So it shall be a bleak morning in some ways, but it will be capped by that glorious "School's Out For Summer!" feel just at the very end, when they dash out of the exam room, already forgetting they ever saw me. Yes, resentment and hatred, like fame, is fleeting.

(Oh, and I always found Stern Proctor, affectionately known as "Hansy," to be a very useful card. For a 1/2 with a special talent, he is very cheap to cast at two islands. A good bargain.)

(And if you understood that last bit, you have no right to call me a nerd - EVER!)

FedEx to the Rescue!

Well, I was barely in under the wire on a summer fellowship application for Jewish Studies doctoral work to Temple University in Philadelphia. They need it there for Monday. It is Thursday. Luckily, FedEx could get it there for me tomorrow - EARLY no less! Ah, another instance of advances in communications and transportation technology coming to the rescue of the perpetually lazy!

It did, however, cost me 30 clams, so I paid for my indolence. Literally.

The adage "you have to spend money to make money" does spring to mind. However, since it is an American school, and I am some nobody in Canada with absolutely NO chance in hell of ever getting the award, I still can't help but think that is one hell of an expensive rejection letter I'll be getting in a month.

They better be civil in it. And it better come with a chocolate mint.

Try and Try Again

Now I go to ship out another grant proposal. Wish me luck. I need it.

A Brutal Day

In the same day that I heard that I could not move one of my fourth year TAships to the summer to save myself with, I also heard that I am yet again rejected for the external funding we all so desperately need and want.

Why do those people reject me EVERY SINGLE YEAR? I have good grades, and an ok project... I floss when I think of it... WHAT MORE DO THEY WANT????

I knew the OGS was a long shot, but it was sort of becoming my last hope. So what the hell was Princess Leia planning on doing if Obi Wan refused to come?

So, yeah, back to square one. All my plans die one by one. At this rate, when I finally do get a job at a Tim Horton's somewhere, it will burn down, taking my life savings ($2.25 for the bus, baby!) with it.

GAH!

My Last Smoke

Well, since I got word today that yet ANOTHER possibility is dead, there seems to be little hope left for me. Folks, you are looking at a student facing absolute financial disaster. Wow! Was I once hoping for enough money to visit Murph this summer? Yeah, now try "Enough to keep me from being evicted."

So, this is an end of an era. I am now having my very last cigarette, because I just can't afford them any more. What's the sense of sleeping on the sidewalk while smoking?

So, fair well lovely friends. You've been a real pal.

...

Oh, and by the way, self-righteous bull-sh*t comments crowing over this supposed victory for clean living will not be welcomed. In fact, they will deleted while I curse you. So don't even try it, please and thank you. OK?

One Plan Crashes and Burns

Thought I had a way out of the recent summer money shortage, but it turns out it is too late to make it work. Shoot! Oh well, it was worth a shot.

So now what is next... What are we on now? Plan N?

*sigh*

Feeling Human Again

I am filled with a good renewed vigour for my comp work, setting up new strategies for preparing during this final month. There is still stress, but now there is also "can-do," plus energy to do. I think I'm going to be ok.

So now I am eating a series of bite-sized pancakes, which, for some reason, are really cheering me, missing Murph (but not in a morbid way), and just feeling like things are going to be ok.

(Oh, and I updated FotoBlog, too. Lord that is a fun blog!)

cornered

You remember that scene in It's a Wonderful Life, where George is about to jump off the bridge, but Clarence stops him? Clarence eventually shows George that his life had meaning, and still had hope.

Well, I see the bridge. Now, where's Clarence?

Student Loans Can Bite Me. Seriously.

I am mired. I need a loan this summer. There are no two ways about it, really. Either I get the OGS (insert hollow laugh of impossibility here) or I get a loan, or I starve, starting May 1st. The issue is, as usual, that I am kind of late getting the paper work done. However, this year I am getting smarter and will get ALL the paper work in at the same time, rather than sending in the application, waiting six weeks, getting a letter saying I don't have everything, sending more stuff in, and waiting yet another six weeks to hear from them, process the loan, and then wait a week for my money.

However, this year I have brand new troubles. How does one get the signature of a husband on loan papers within a week when he is in West Virginia? OK, if you can figure that one out, try this one on for size: How does one supply the loan people with your new husband's Canadian social insurance number when he isn't Canadian? You like that one? OK, how do you explain to them that you don't actually LIVE with your husband, but nor are you separated? On top of that, how do you explain that my marital status does not influence the fact that I still have to pay my own bills?

Good lord! What decade are we in? Why do I need my husband to approve my loan? And why should I expect my husband to fork over the dough for my tuition? Do I need his permission? Am I expected to be a leech off of him? Perhaps THAT is why I am in school, no?

DUMB ass government loans can bite my SMART ass. And if I starve, I won't go down quietly.

Tuesday Interrupted

Today is both the tenth and a Tuesday, which would usually be mega-date-night for Murph and I, but the little Scamp is still off visiting West Virginia, so it won't be nearly as much fun as it might have been. Still, we should get a bit of time on the chat in at the least, and that shall have to be enough.

But, then, it isn't like I don't have enough work to do. With a semi-major conference coming up on the 5th of May, and my comprehensive exam on the 11th, and a fellowship application to get in the mail PDQ, I guess I am pretty much taken care of in terms of distractions and tasks.

Now, add to that the fact that I am still uncertain how I will hold body or soul together after the May 1st rent check clears, and you get a pretty harried Holly.

And the Spring started out with so much promise...

(And this post has been a major pain in the arse due to pilot error and technical difficulties. Much more trouble than it was worth, I think.)

Poor Regular Blog, There's a New Blog in Town

I know I have been silent here today, but I posted twice on my new blog. Blogging about old photos can be pretty addictive. Care to try it out?

Meh

I was up, down and all around today. Now I am just drained.

Do You Give a Click for the World's Problems?

Help Feed The Hungry @ The Hunger Site

There are multiple sites here. Don't care about the hungry? There are also literacy clicks, endangered animal clicks, and other charitable clicks. Why not do the raft while you're there?

Does anyone know anything about this? It seems kind of distasteful in an odd way -- corporations seem to HAVE the money to help, but they demand you click for it before they'll give it out. Man, just cut out the middle men, eh?

In any case, there's no sign up, so go ahead and give a click.

I Have a Photgraph

Spent some time today scanning old pictures to share with old friends on facebook. Some of them are too funny to really be believed any more. Did any of us ever look like that?

However, those little captions only whetted my appetite to tell the full stories wrapped around some of the old photos I have in my giant shoe box of lost years, and my facebook is getting rather filled with freeze frames of good times. And it isn't really the right place for the bad times.

So I have decided to start a photo-blog. I refuse to call it digi-scrapping, mostly because I refuse to be both old and young enough to know that term. Instead, I have called it FotoBlog.

Mainly, it will be for me, and occasionally for the people I feature in it, but really it is to record memories. It is my penceive, I would say if I were a Potter nerd. Sometimes memories aren't much use unless you can write them out.

100

I just hit friend number 100 on facebook! Does that mean that I can now stop sulking over all those kids who teased me in high school? I can now feel like I sit at the cool kids' table? That all my weakened self-image issues will just disappear?

Not likely, really. Sadly, facebook means nothing (though it has brought me in touch with a lot of old friends).

Afterall, 100 friends or no, I am still sitting here alone on a Saturday night waiting for a cute boy to call. (Don't worry, the cute boy is my husband -- thought you'd get a whiff of scandal there, eh? Ha ha! Suckas!)

(And I still can't get that bloody song from the last post out of my head. Can't wait to see Murph do his happy dance to that one...)

So... Low...

My face is permanently plastered on my desk surface. If you need me, I will be just lying here moaning until I fall asleep or my throat quits, one or the other.

I Guess I Just Don't Have What it Takes to Be a Pirate

Well, one warning shot across my bow from the b*tch ship Paramount, and I am done with downloading. My net connection is too important to me to risk it, even if I am too broke to actually buy movies any more. However, to all those cats out there who do have the cahones to keep going, more power to you!

Oh, and to Paramount: That movie was a dog -- maybe if you actually made movies that didn't suck, people would be less likely to steal them. There is no way in hell I would have paid money to own that, so you really weren't out anything.

Hope it makes you feel like a Big Man, Paramount. I hope you enjoy picking on the Little Guy.

Holiday Weekend?

Uhhh... Well, I am either terrible with holidays, or have lost track of the time (or month), but is it Good Friday today? Easter weekend this weekend? Wow...

So. Huh. Well, happy holidays... if it IS a holiday, that is...

G&T Anyone?

Well, in the absence of my perennial chat buddy, I have been having a good Girl's Night with our mutual friend (and my dutiful bridesmaid) Amanda, who introduced Murph and I to begin with.

Life has gone full circle now, I guess.

(And the above pic is for any reader who has wondered what Amanda looks like -- she is quite possibly the most adorable girl in the world, so it was hard to choose which one to use, but this likely sums her cuteness up.)

(Oh, and for Murph, when he reads this: Don't worry; we were kind to you with the Girl Talk, I promise.)

Happy Trails

Just signed off the phone with Murph, who is about to catch a Greyhound to West Virginia at 6am. I know he has been stuck away from me in Ohio for some time now, but having him leave the computer and phone we have become so attached to is like losing him even more. Well, if there is one way to make half the month I have left before my comp exam seem like a year, it is losing contact with Murph, I guess.

And why is it I can take or leave bread most of the time, but as soon as Passover hits and I can't have the stuff, I get massive cravings? I would sell my left leg for a lettuce, tomato and mayo sandwich on toast right now... with a bit of black pepper. Right now leaven is up there with all the forbidden pleasures in civilized life - like, I don't know... cocaine, jogging pants in public, and Jacqueline Susann novels.

Gah! How many doomed cravings can one person sustain before their mind breaks!?!?

Can We Skip Summer this Year?

At a final reckoning, it very much looks like it will be at least September before Murph makes it back to Canada, even if everything goes as smoothly as possible. Quite a blow.

Five months...

By September, we will have been married eight months and will have spent roughly three weeks (maybe more if I can scrape up the funds) in the same place together. Bummer.

However, yesterday I registered for the Spring Term for "RE899: Doctoral Dissertation." And today marks exactly one month until my second and final doctoral exam. Looks like I am going to be busy, at least, so that should keep me from falling off the edge.

It won't keep me happy, but it will keep me occupied.

Safe travels, Murph.

Memory Lane

Recently, I have been leafing through the archives of my life and marriage. Old photos, old blog posts, old emails, old files... painful pleasure, so acute I don't know which one wins out.

Tonight I turned around to ask Murph if he was ready to head to bed. But Murph is in Ohio. For that split second, I was so sure it was November again, and we were safe and happy in our own home. When I looked back and realized I was alone, reality caved in on me.

Right now, I would give anything to make that moment's error reality - to be able to look over my shoulder right now, take his hand, say "Time to turn in, love," and wrap myself in that bliss I miss so much. So many times we did this in November. Did we ever take it for granted? If so, I can promise I will never take it for granted again, once he is home.

Did you ever want to crawl into a memory and stay there forever?

Rejuvination

Spring is here, and the Passover season is upon us, and it is time for renovating one's life.

Tonight is my last Tuesday date night with Murph before he heads to West Virginia for a couple of weeks away with an old friend. We will enjoy tonight as much as possible given the frustrations of life we both carry with us. Then, in a few days when he is off, I will spend my time quietly -- much too quiet, I assume, but I can deal with it. I will clean this rat's nest and get it ready for the warm season. I will hit the books hard and start making final preparations for that last comp exam in May. I will look ahead to summer, and do what I can to assure a smooth transition from my seasonal work to my seasonal unemployment.

In short, I will take care of a few things that tend to get side tracked when love is in the air... or at least when it is online or on the phone.

It is true that I had been depressed of late, but I am starting to regain my strength and vigour. Saturday night, I went to synagogue for the first time in years and years. It was a Reform seder, and some of the procedures and songs were new to me, but it was uplifting, just the same. Sharing fellowship with a community is something that I had been so long removed from, I was nervous about returning, but it didn't hurt a bit. In fact, I feel a sense of rightfulness just having gone.

I had not been looking forward to it, really. My own ritual inclinations lean a bit more towards the Orthodox, I guess, but my politics lean far more to the Reform, so I had always felt like I was one who would slip between the cracks. No longer, however, will I accept that. Sometimes fellowship is as much about making a place for yourself as it is respecting those around you. I can handle that.

And, aside from all that, it is Tuesday. So that is where I am right now, and that is always cause for happiness, no?

Be well, everybody.

PS: The original title of this post had been "Re-JEW-vination," but the tone of the post came out so much more saccharin and maudlin than I intended it to be, and it no longer fit. However, it still makes me chuckle, so I have tacked it on to cut through the treacle.

April 1, already?

Well, I am not stopping long. I am feeling better than I was, thankfully, but I think a bit of a break from blogging is still not a bad idea. I just thought I'd update to let everyone know that I was alive.

Sent off those rush-job exam question suggestions the Advisor requested. Unless she was "April Fool's" pranking me, she thinks they were "quite impressive." That has got to cheer a girl up, eh?

Well, back to my break time.
