Today is the National Day of Mourning set aside to remember workers killed on the job, or who died due to work-related injuries or illness. It promotes the idea that the loss of a worker is not just a family or local tragedy, but it is a cause of grief for all workers in solidarity, and it represents a loss to our society as a whole.
It is a day to mourn, but also a day to promote health and safety concerns in our workplaces, and while it may be a good time to reflect on how much working conditions in Canada have improved, it is also a day to acknowledge that they are not good enough as long as workers are still being killed or poisoned just by doing their jobs.
It is a day to mourn the dead, but also to fight for the living.
