On October 14, 1943, approximately 300 inmates of the Sobibor death camp revolted against their captors and broke for freedom across a landmine field, under a rain of bullets. Reaching the forest their only goal, many did not make it. Due to the efforts of the Sobibor resistance leaders and the courage of the rebels, the camp was shut down, and 50 escaped inmates survived to the end of the war. At least 250,000 Jews were killed at Sobibor before it was closed in 1943.
